Update [Jan. 7th, 2010|05:15 am]

macabrefreak
I am in Israel. Its a beautiful 72 degrees. I am at the moment using up the internet because I have no idea when I will catch it again.

A day after I got here a terrorist came to the settlement I am staying in and cut the internets and phone wires here. It was interesting. The army came out of nowhere. Security into the territories increased and so did the waiting time for driving through the Israeli road blocks.

Otherwise all has been quiet.

I head out to the desert next week. Hoping the weather holds up.

Hope you are all staying warm.

Dear Life Journal:

I'm trying a new encryption sequence.  Hopefully it will keep this journal away from prying eyes. And honestly its not as though people couldn't trace it back to me anyway. My sequence code is all over that server.

I just woke up from the worst week I've ever had.  Budget time is always the worst, but I can't believe that Green would try to cut our budget by so much.  Its not like I had much else to do.  I spent the last week getting about 2 hours a sleep a night.  Thank Yahweh for Info Corps "Keep Me Ups".  Honestly had it not been a hell week my alternatives would have been little better.  I could have gone to the bar every night this week like most of my cooperate level.  Or back to my family, if I had any.  They'd all end up dead anyway.  But still.... I do miss that feeling.  I get it sometimes when someone says "Thanks Chief".  Work is really all I got left and all I am is some middle manager looking for some way to justify my existence to a boss who doesn't know any better.  The only reason she has her job is due to her mother anyways... but there goes the saying "Once Upper Management, Always Upper Management".

I'm starting to look for some funding alternatives. Maybe going after the Hazard Additional Benefits or that (HAB Funds). We almost got it after the gillan file, but then Kevin lost communication. I really hope he's alive. I liked that guy.  But I e-mailed one of the assistant directors to the marketing department.  He gave me his databits last year.  I know he didn't remember me... but I have to try something and this is a long shot.  A real long shot.  I'm going to head down to the Geocities Site today to see what else they have.  I'll need to get creative with the budget.

Maybe there's a HR rule? I am one fried motherboard.

John,

How's your wife doing? I heard she's recovering from an operation. I hope she's recovering well. Anyway the reason for this mail is that I have an idea that might pique your interest. Something some of my boys found in archives:
.
They dug up some old plans for some "Rock Cities" called "GeoCities". Which never really got off the ground, but definitely made an impact in the beginning of the Golden Age (Hence all the construction signs). I figured they may be good for PR in regards to some of that mining the Rootlickers are always giving us grief over. Your the marketing wizard, that was just some of my thoughts. I've given you 48 hour access to the file. Anyway let me know if there's anything you can use and we can see about getting it forwarded to marketing.

Erica,

Thank you for your wonderful gift.  Although I've read it, I will always keep your copy to remind me about the values that you hold dear.  Speaking of which I wanted to ask about our Eisenberg Efficiency ratio, which although down 11% is still holding steady at a 140:1, which is significantly higher then Project Falling Star's Eisenberg ratio of 90:1. Additionally we've increased our product threshold an additional 5% past our yearly goals.

I wanted to mention this only because there seems to be a higher value placed on Project Falling Star because they seem to have potential, unfortunately the facts do not support this argument.  Satellites were used primarily as the means to transfer information, not store it.  Infusing more money into this Project will not see it yield any more positive results.  The mission of the Department of Information is to gather information, not antiques which is the only revenue coming out of Falling Star.  Added to the risk they pose by exposing our instruments to  repeated Level 4 risks.  I can't see this ending well.

I also have to wonder if Jerry's project is so well organized why is it needing part of my budget?  Why does it require to have a 25% higher budget then Project Culture Shock in 2223, run over that budget, and then be deemed worthy of taking another $150,000,000 of my budget in 2224?!  I've seen their numbers, and despite any short falls given my goals of this year, they didn't even come close. Despite the lack of any substantive data collected they are receiving more budget?

About results:  Within the last week Project Culture Shock has uploaded You will noticed that my team has uploaded 2 substantive pieces of data over the last week to the registry.  The first comes from one of the local warehouses owned by Info Corp.  We believe it has something to do with constructing cities made out of stone in the late 20th century.  There are massive construction and the host is called "Geocities":  See below for some of the image data.

It could easily be a breakthrough in our understanding of the 20th century, or at the very least an understanding of where the American culture thought it was going at the turn of the century.  We do not see much evidence of these anywhere else so we do not think this was anything more of a fad of the time.  But the ad space alone could make it worth our while.

The second, much larger piece of data comes from Alaska.  I have SHG-Almony working up there on a hazard assignment, which has yielded a very fruitful find.  140 Terabyes of pre-infinity data.  According to Susan the hardware in question was blackboxed in the 2050's due to budget constraints and thus avoided Infinity altogether!  Additional its one of the last library servers to be up and running.  Apparently Alaska still had a state funded library system going until the early 2050's.  It took a lot, but take a look at the data.  Its amazing!

It is due to these discoveries and the information I have mentioned above that I need you to reconsider the budget cuts.  Most of the staff if Culture Shock are excited to see what they can produce, and this is really only a small sample of what is to come in 2224.  Good Luck and as always I am here if you have any technical questions about our discoveries.

SHG: Well I have some data. Actually I've found about 140 terrs worth.
HEL: 140 TERABYTES, that's got to be infected
SHG: No. It was all blackboxed at the time of infinity. The town was since abandoned. The data has a lot of corruption due to time, but this basement was insulated by snow. So the entire time its been a solid 22 degrees and no humidity due to cold. I have a solid 54 gig's to send you.
HEL: 2050s? Why was it blackboxed?
SHG: From what I gather from the physical notes that this was a library system, the Alaskan state has the last public library system in North America to survive the internet, and it finally collapsed.
HEL: Nice work Sue. Anything good?
SHG: I am certain I am working with the libraries server. What I have is newspaper articles, books, movies, and other various stuff from the late 2050's.
HEL: Thats great Sue. Send it over as soon as possible.

SUBJECT: RE: Interoffice Memorandum

With the demands and subsequent results of my team I must ask for the rationale of why my budget needs to be cut?  Especially when you've highlighted Project Falling Star as an example.  This is the same Project Falling Star that have barely made back their initial capitol investment in appropriate data mined (and thats only from antique dealers who want their used hardware), despite almost releasing another mutation of Infinity into Info Corp.  They have never seen enough research to bring forth any relevant data and although the concept of their project is unique they have not yielded anything beyond dead end excuses, a lack of any real substantive data collection, and the risk of infecting our systems with Infinity.

I really need you to reconsider this. There is no one else who has more cohesive Team then Project Culture Shock. It is with this in mind that I am putting in the fourteenth request to reallocate already budgeted money for a pod to be sent to Kevin Tracy (KAT-Laurel).  Kevin was the Field Researcher who cracked the Gillan code.  There was an earthquake and we've been out of contact.  My authority to approve a provisional drop , which for 2 months worth of food and provisions to be air dropped has been lasting him almost a year and a half.  Company policy is that this continues until a transport pod is sent or confirmation of his death.  I need Kevin back up and running.  Any dip in my numbers can easily be attributed to the fact that he has been either MIA or his position unfilled since his dissappearence.  He is a valued member of my team, and as you have already stated: Team Thinking is the key to success.  And success is measured in data gathered and dollars made.  Falling Star has neither and KAT has given us both.

Which brings me back to my initial point.  I can not have my funding cut.  Several of my researchers are close to some huge breakthroughs and we need the capitol to continue.  We're very close to something here and our results, although not always pretty, have always given this department a net gain financially and comparatively with some of the other departments.  The gillan files is a good example of that.  You should remember that it was Kevin who found it, and because of that we got a 5.4% increase to our total budgetary allocation which allowed Project Falling Star to get off the ground to begin with.

Thank you for your wishes and especially given what Human Resources might say, best of luck to you in the New Year.

Dear LJ,

Holy St. Batman! I don't know who that was, but that was an eye opener. Back in the days of Life Journals they could use their real names. But now I see why they didn't. Before the Internet Disclosure Act of 2030 people could log onto "the internet" anonymously. Maybe thats why they could be so forthright. I will attempt to do the same. I have changed my previous entry and covered my tracks as best as possible. I really do not wish to lose my life as I know it this early on. But I have passed the point of no return on this project so I may as well continue.

So, my boss, who I will not name but for the moment we'll call her Satan Marx, is telling me that my budget is being reduced by over $150,000,000. Thats an entire quarter of my budget! What the hell does she think she's doing! There is no way that I can lose that much of my budget. The word on the datamine is that she's funneling it to the satellite extraction project. The only thing they've discovered is variations of infinity that almost infected our entire system! We've hit some major data mines and she wants.

There's no way I am going to fire anyone and I know thats what she wants. Well back to the Programming Board.

Dear LJ,

During the Golden Age, before Infinity, people kept logs of their life. They wrote them down. Even more surprising is that they did this before an open audience who would read their inner most thoughts. It must have been nice to live in such a society where you could trust the public and people reading your LJ, or Life Journal, not to cause you harm, discomfort, or use it against you. I believe they called them this because these journals were a representative of their Life.

I am writing this now because InfoCorp recently intercepted a transmission about that. The copy of the transmission I received was scrambled, or at least the copy they gave me wasn't complete, but it got me thinking.

Ke@&!, a very passionate guy who works for me, was able to glean some information about the people and society at the time. It was very scrambled due to infinity and its incredibly hard to understand the context, but it gives us some clue about the people who lived at that time. I am hoping that I can do the same.

If I leave a copy of my thoughts and memories in this Life Journal... I may be able to help the future learn something. Or maybe I'll be famous, but not until after I am dead. Hopefully I can preserve some of the better findings that we gather here as well. There's got to be some hope for the future to make it better.

There is of course some risk to this. If anyone inside, or worse, outside of InfoCorp finds out about this I will be immediately terminated. I have taken measures against it, even writing my own encryption routine and using my own server. Also the files I send will be small enough that they even if they are noticed they should be considered Infinity white noise. I do believe the risk will be minimal and well worth what I have to write for the future generations.

:\\@&"J!*B&@) -Belial
